AWARENESS PROGRAMME AT ST. MARY’S SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

As one of its activities to mark the 2015 National Diabetes Week/World Diabetes Day, the Kafui Foundation for Childhood Diabetes, (KFCD) in collaboration with the Diabetes Youth Care, (DYC) organized an awareness programme at the St. Mary’s Senior High School, Accra, on Tuesday, 17th November, 2015.

Dr. J. Nelson, a member of the Foundation who is the Chief Medical Officer and a Diabetes Care-giver at the Trust Hospital, Dansoman, addressed the student body and some staff members on Diabetes Mellitus Type 1, its causes, symptoms, management, monitoring and its possible effects on the student living with the condition. In educating the students, Dr. Nelson tried to diffuse any myths or stigmas that people may have on their minds.

He stressed that teachers and fellow school mates had an important role to play to assist a student living with the condition. He advised teachers to be observant, supportive and call for help or the school nurse when a student had a problem.

Being the alma mater of Kafui in whose memory the NGO was founded, and to encourage students to read more, the Foundation donated 55 books including novels, science and French books to the School Library.
